To put it succinctly, it was like the Oscars.
The 65th Miss Universe® candidates channeled Hollywood glitz and glam at the much-anticipated Governor’s Ball, held last January 16 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. The black-tie charity gala marked the first time all 86 contestants shared the stage since their respective arrivals. It also served as a venue for them to get acquainted the pageant’s major sponsors, supporters, and other local VIPs.
In attendance were Miss Universe ® 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, LCS Chairperson Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson, MUO President Paula Shugart, Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada, Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo, Solar Entertainment Corporation President and CEO Wilson Tieng, and actresses Gretchen Barretto and Alice Dixson. Serving was emcee was supermodel and host Joey Mead.
The event commenced with the ladies parading alphabetically by country in evening gowns that reflected their personal styles. By the end of the program, Pia took the stage and delivered yet another inspiring speech: “Miss Universe ® is not just a pretty girl onstage, who’s fit, who’s wearing a beautiful designer gown. It’s about a woman with a story, a woman who’s ready to be the spokesperson, [and] a woman who’s ready to take on the job. And I hope that woman is ready.”
